Dr. Steve Hurby
Dr. Steve Hruby is the founder and visionary of Kai-Zen: A Creating Wellness Center. He was born and raised with his two brothers in Arizona. His parents still live in Tucson, where his mother is a retired professor of Physics and his father is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Arizona.

Shortly after graduating from the University of Arizona, Dr. Steve experienced his first chiropractic adjustment when a friend dragged him to a chiropractor because he was suffering from severe low back pain. Within a week his pain was gone. Fortunately for Dr. Steve, the doctor educated him that even though the pain - the effect, or symptom - was gone, the underlying cause of the problem was not fixed. Dr. Steve decided to continue on with treatment in order to address the cause of his symptoms. Soon enough, Dr. Steve experienced a dramatic improvement in his overall health -- the allergies that he had suffered since early childhood were mostly resolved, and his energy levels rose significantly. It was at this time that Dr Steve dedicated himself to becoming a chiropractor and serving others. After graduating Palmer West College of Chiropractic in 2000, Dr. Steve proceeded to open Essential Chiropractic in 2001. After several years, Dr Steve began work on the vision of creating a wellness office that would incorporate more than just chiropractic. This wellness office would not only help people get out of pain, but would provide clients with the tools to achieve their lifestyle and health goals. It would include a multitude of services that promoted the philosophy that "health comes from the inside-out." Kai-Zen opened its doors in March of 2007.

Dr. Chris Bonin
Dr. Chris Bonin was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He spent most of his summers at his family cottage fishing and hiking, and most of his winters on the ice, playing hockey. After experiencing a close family member's sudden death, Dr. Chris knew he was interested in the realm of healing. Following his hockey days, he attended the University of Manitoba where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry and Microbiology. In these courses, he studied how the nervous system controls every cell in your body, and learned that if there is any interference to the nervous system, a diseased state will occur. He then realized what chiropractors around the world have been doing for over a hundred years. Health wasn't about covering up aches and pains with potions, lotions and pills -- it was about prevention. This research changed Dr. Chris' life forever.

Dr. Chris attended Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Upon finishing his education at Northwestern, he made the decision to move to Arizona to be in a warmer climate and to experience the challenge of living in a new place. Over the years he has attended many seminars to provide the most up to date care for his patients including studies in Nutrition, Physical Therapy, Radiology and Philosophy. Dr. Chris is also licensed in Physiotherapy and holds a Radiology qualification. He has been a featured speaker and has given many health seminars and lectures on a number of topics across the United States and Canada.

Dr. Chris' passion is to provide the highest level of Wellness Care for everyone. As a member of the Kai-Zen team, his mission is to educate and empower the community to make better health choices for themselves and their children.

Alejandra Rodriguez
Alejandra Rodriguez is an acupuncturist at Kai-Zen. She believes that wellness is a function of the whole mind, body, and spirit. While a condition and its symptoms must be treated, Alejandra approaches conditions by first focusing on emotional release. She believes the body holds onto emotional memories of stress, which can manifest itself as illness - and releasing this tension can begin the process of healing. By addressing not just the physical manifestations but also the root cause of the condition, the patient is more likely to see a holistic and long-lasting recovery, and is less likely to relapse into old patterns. Alejandra is an empathetic and compassionate healer, and her patients' comfort and understanding are her first concerns.

Alejandra is a graduate of the Atlantic Institute of Oriental Medicine, which is an accredited Traditional Chinese Medicine Academy in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She received a Bachelor's in Health Science and a Masters Degree in Oriental Medicine. She is board certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). She is also licensed by the state of Arizona as a Traditional Chinese Medicine physician. Alejandra was trained on the NADA protocol (National Acupuncture Detoxification), which is used worldwide for the treatment of substance abuse, depression, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Alejandra also taught as a Clinic Supervisor at the Arizona School of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in Tucson, Arizona. The Life Extension Foundation, a nutraceutical information-based company, also employed her as a Health Advisor where she discussed health concerns, shared research, and advised callers on general nutritional health and modalities of treatment.

Nikki Norton
Until about a year ago, Nikki Norton had never been to chiropractor. She was an aspiring nurse and was surrounded by the allopathic way of life. After working in a salon for three years, she decided it was time to try to get her foot in the door to the healthcare industry. Given the opportunity to work for a chiropractor, Nikki took the job and was amazed by what she saw.

She learned that the body is a self-healing organism, able to heal itself without medication. After getting regular adjustments, she no longer has to take allergy medication or use inhalers for her asthma. After experiencing both physical and mental change, and after learning more about the wellness lifestyle, Nikki has decided to leave nursing behind and pursue a career in chiropractic care.

In the near future, Nikki plans on attending Cleveland Chiropractic University to earn her bachelors in human biology and doctorate degree in chiropractic. In the meanwhile, she is very excited to be the welcoming face of Kai-Zen and enjoys keeping the business running behind the scenes.

Dustin Jones
Dustin Jones is the newest addition to the Kai-Zen team. He graduated from the physical therapy program at Apollo College and has been working in Phoenix as a certified chiropractic assistant and physical therapy technician for the last two years.

Growing up in Morenci, AZ, Dustin was involved with many different competitive sports teams; being as athletic as he was, injuries were bound to happen. One season, he injured his ankle and went to a physical therapy clinic for treatment. He was excited to find a field that allows him to keep in touch with his athletic side, helping other active people like himself!

Dustin can be found in the Kai-Zen physical therapy area, working with patients to improve their health and wellness through stretching and exercise. He enjoys helping patients achieve their goals and become stronger individuals.

Joan Spencer
In order to fulfill her lifelong interest in health and well being, Joan Spencer left the corporate world after 23 years to obtain her Masters degree from the Arizona School of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in Tucson. For Joan, working with people to improve their health is the greatest joy there is.

Joan has a special interest in treating depression, anxiety, many forms of pain, and chronic conditions. She also offers weight loss and cosmetic acupuncture. Using a combination of old and new techniques her treatments include acupuncture, qi gong, reiki, & tuning forks. To complement her therapy, Chinese herbal formulas, flower essences and exercises may be prescribed.

Joan believes there are two keys are important to successful treatments: Listening and Continuing Education. Listening is critical in finding the problem and its root. Sara (Blanchard)
Sara (Blanchard) Frederick received a BA from Harvard in East Asian Studies. She worked at the investment bank Goldman Sachs in their Tokyo, Hong Kong, and New York offices. By definition, she was living the successful "American Dream" when in 2004, her father suddenly took ill and passed away. Faced with this shock, she started re-evaluating her own life priorities; at this time, a chance encounter with an old college instructor introduced her to the field of coaching. Knowing that finance wasn't her passion, and knowing that she had always been drawn to the field of wellness, she took on the challenge of leaving prestige and monetary rewards for a virtually unknown career. She is very thankful that she did, because she has found a field she is passionate about and has never looked back.

Sara received coaching certification through iPEC, the Institute for Professional Empowerment Coaching. She is a member of the International Coaching Federation (ICF), the National Association for Women Business Owners (NAWBO), and the International Positive Psychology Association (IPPA). She recently returned from Harvard where she was a Teaching Fellow for the Positive Psychology course during the spring of 2008.

Sara is very excited to be bringing her passion and experience in coaching to the Creating Wellness program at Kai-Zen.
